(To the tune of "Creeque Alley " by the Mamas and the Papas) M. James 06/21/06
In the 1960's, Roddenberry thought it risky
But he wrote a wagon train to the stars
A new depiction
Hopeful science fiction
Who knew if the show would go far?
He tried selling it to CBS
And they said no thanks but Desilu said yes
Roddenberry's vision of a five-year mission
Was what a hit show would be
But Trek made NBC TV history
Gene said, "Fellas, the stories that will sell us
Gotta show some continuity."
Not just white men to outer space will we send them
We'll show cultural diversity."
So there was a multiracial crew
And aliens that could relate to me and you
Roddenberry's vision of a five-year mission
Was what a hit show should be
But Trek made NBC TV history
By the third season the network had a reason
To make the show disappear
Bjo Trimble wrote in
Started up a campaign
The show's reprieved for one more year
The Wecommittee formed to support fans
The New York convetions drew them by the thousands
Roddenberry's vision of a five-year mission
Wasn't what the show would be
But Trek made NBC TV history
Picard, Sisko, Janeway, Archer
They were worthy captains too
The past and the future
Shown in new adventure
Say goodbye to Kirk and crew
Five series and ten films in the franchise
All form a vessel called the Starship Enterprise
Roddenberry's vision of a five-year mission
Wasn't what the show would be
But Trek was making media history
Home computers, Blackberries, CAT scans
And non-invasive surgery
iPods, cell phones, launching deep space probes
Are objectives not fantasy
'Cause the show inspired a generation
To start a revolution in communication
Roddeberry's vision took off on a mission
That even Gene himself didn't see
And the world of Star Trek is becoming a reality
And the world of Star Trek is becoming a reality
